services, have certainly realised his growing expertise in the use of the FDTD modelling and material measurement  techniques for microwave research and engineering. Michal exhibited a strong and sustained desire to learn more about those fields and to personally contribute thereto. It would be hard not to mention Michal's warm personality and his never-ceasing willingness to be of help.

Throughout his so short professional life, Michal co-authored 11 journal and symposium papers. He delivered talks at several leading microwave events, such as the IEEE MTT-S International Microwave Symposium, ACES International Review of Progress in Applied Computational Electromagnetics, IET Conference on Computation in Electromagnetics, and  International Conference on Microwaves, Radar and Wireless Communications MIKON.  The last and sadly post-mortem presentation was given on Michal's behalf  by his colleague at the recent AMPERE International Conference on Microwave and High Frequency Heating (8 September 2011). We believe that Michal's works will remain with us, in quotations and references, for their real value and in memory of our lost team-mate and friend.

It is with deep sorrow that we inform about a great loss. Michal Soltysiak, a Ph.D. student at the Warsaw University of Technology and a project engineer at QWED, passed away on 7 September 2011, at the age of 31. Only two weeks earlier he had been diagnosed with a grave illness, which made rapid and reckless developments. His sudden death was a heavy shock for QWED team and Michal's colleagues at the University. We all deeply sympathise with Michal's Mother, whose grief one may hardly imagine.

Those of you who had a chance to get to know Michal, whether through his participation in microwave scientific events, QWED projects, or QuickWave support
